Report from the Kootenay Region

November, 2008

Are we there yet? Apart from the weather, labour struggles and golf round variances the 2008 season was tremendous! Sarcasm aside, the Kootenay courses survived a very turbulent summer with everyone looking forward to a nice calm winter and perhaps a little less challenging 2009.

As for the Kootenay Chapter of the BCGSA, we indeed had a tremendous season with bolstered membership numbers, our best line-up of speakers to date and great participation at all events.

Our first meeting took place at the Creston Golf Club on March 18th - host Devan Davidson. Dr. Kent Mullinex from Kwantlen University and representing the Institute for Sustainable Horticulture (ISH) described and updated status of the Planthealth B.C. I.P.M. Accreditation program.

Next was Trickle Creek in June – host Ray Guimont that saw the WCTA Tars program presented by Bob Wick and Dave Duncan. Very valuable CEC points were obtained and yea, we finally got to play at Trickle! (usually Ray hosts the March meeting). The Cranbrook Golf Club and Kevin Schiefner played host to our August meeting with Otterbine/Barebo’s Bud Laidlaw giving a very informative session on pond management.

And finally, the most fun event (according to polls) was the Fall Field Day held here at Kokanee Springs. As per tradition, the rain couldn’t stay away but we managed to squeak in all the festivities and most everyone walked away with more than they came. The highlight for many was the presentation from Larry Gilhuly of the USGA, arguably the best speaker the Kootenays has ever had.

Thanks again to all our members, executive, speakers, sponsors and host clubs for the tremendous support and we look forward to another progressive year in 2009.

Respectfully submitted,
Jerry Rousseau
Kootenay Chapter Representative
