Report from the Kootenay Region

October, 2011

What a crazy year this has turned out to be. Started off in the deep freeze wondering if it will ever warm up. Then into the heat wondering when it will cool down. Here in the Kootenay’s it has been hot for some time now. Irrigation systems at full capacity and extra staff required to battle hot spots. I for one could use a little help from Mother Nature and give my system a break so my holding pond can catch up. Talking to superintendents through the valley not much has changed in regards to golf rounds. It was a slow start to the season with rounds and memberships down with a few busy times in between. We are still seeing the red plates from Alberta but very few plates south of the boarder. Our American friends are not accustomed to their dollar being this low.

Another hot topic with superintendents is the issue of pesticides. I have to thank Darren Reddekopp for all his hard work and great ideas on what we can do as superintendents to get the word out to our local politicians in our individual regions. Darren thanks and keep up the great work.

The Kootenay Fall Field Day has come and gone in a flash. I guess when you’re having a great time it all goes by in a blur. This year’s fall field day was held at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort hosted by Tom Altmann. This was a two day event with the first day of golf held at the Creek Side Course. It was a two man best ball tourney with plenty of laughs and enjoyed by all who played. Each group met with industry representatives and discussed their business and services as well as showcased any new products or service innovations they may have had.

The second day was our BCGSA Kootenay chapter meeting and golf tournament at Mountainside Golf Club. This was another great day with our meeting held in the morning followed by a four man best ball tournament. Tom Altmann, Shane Wilkinson, Colin Tindall and the rest of the crew did an outstanding job on both courses. A big thank you goes out to Tom, Shane, Colin and the maintenance crew and to the entire Fairmont staff for their first class service.
