As I write this, most northern chapter superintendents have concluded their 2008 golf seasons and are now in the final process of winterizing their golf courses for the coming freeze and snow. Notice I stated “most”.
One of the great things about being a northern chapter member is the geographical diversity that exists within our membership. Although we all have different climatic challenges with seasons that range from six months in the interior to upwards of ten months along the coastal range, one issue we all seem to share is the changing face of the demographics that exist within our labour force.
I remember the days, not too long ago it seems, when I had enough résumés to choose top candidates to fill key positions on my golf course crew. It is obvious that those days are long gone. What happened to make things change? What caused this shift? How do we as managers adjust to this change? What does the future hold for us, our golf course industry, and most commonly… today’s generation?
These are some of the questions that were answered at our fall meeting. Sasja Nieukirk, of NewQuest Consulting in Kamloops, gave a dynamic presentation to our membership regarding the issues we face as managers in a multi-generational workforce. Many of the answers to our questions came as basic statistics – within our audience, there were fourteen “baby boomers” or “traditionalists”, seven “generation X’ers” and three “generation Y’ers”. Apparently these numbers mirror our labour force and are a good example of the demographic of our population. Each generation has its “issues” which was interesting and entertaining to learn about to say the least.
Before I conclude this report, I would like to give some words of encouragement to Greg Broome of Hirsch Creek Golf in Kitimat. For those that don’t know Greg, he has been on the northern chapter board for more than a dozen or so years as our treasurer and recently had a back problem that required surgery and caused him to miss most of this year’s season. Greg had successful surgery and is recovering. His club supporting him through his painful ordeal is a testament to the fine job he has done. We wish you the best in your recovery Greg. Your peers admire you.
