It’s been hard to tell at times due to the cooler and wetter than normal spring weather, but another golf season is up and running. Let’s hope by the time you read this that we have seen a change in the weather ~ I’m sure this sentiment is shared at pro shop registers throughout the province!
In April, Scott Wheeler hosted our first meeting of the year at the Gorge Vale Golf Course in Victoria. Rick Munro of Greenside Environmental Services was our guest speaker, and made a presentation to the group on spray tip technology. Steve White hosted our May meeting at the Port Alberni Golf Club, with guest speakers Jerry Rousseau and the WCTA TARS team providing a very informative and educational session.
On June 8th, we had the pleasure of hosting the Vancouver Island Pro/Super Tournament here at the Crown Isle Golf Resort. We had a great turnout for the event, with 19 teams of Golf Superintendents and Professionals battling for the top prize. Once again, Isle Golf Cars and Oakcreek Golf & Turf sponsored the event, awarding the season long use of a golf car and utility vehicle to the golf club of the winning team. This year’s champions were Gil Leblanc and Lance McCullough from the Cordova Bay GC.
Our next meeting of the season will be July 13th, at the Arbutus Ridge Golf Course, with Tom Hsiang of the University of Guelph as our guest speaker. Tom’s presentation will focus on disease control strategies specific to the West Coast.
Best wishes to Darren Burns as he plays host to the 2010 TELUS Skins Game at Bear Mountain June 21st and 22nd. I’m sure that Darren will have the course in top condition for the event, and I understand that many area VIGSA members are volunteering to help him and his crew with those efforts.
Dean Piller and the VIGSA MS Committee are already planning for next year’s charity fundraising event, and are currently looking at putting together a golf themed fundraiser for later this summer. Committee member Greg Kowalski recently presented the MS Society of Canada with a cheque for $100,000 in the name of the Vancouver Island Golf Superintendents Association. Congratulations to Dean, Greg, and all those involved with making this event a success.
Hope this island update finds you well, and all the best for the remainder of your golf season.
