Job Overview:
The Head Horticulturist is responsible for the meticulous upkeep, renovation, and enhancement of the golf course's horticulture areas, encompassing approximately 3 acres. This role ensures the aesthetic appeal and health of the property's flora while contributing to a positive member experience. The Head Horticulturist oversees a team of seasonal staff, manages budgets, and proactively seeks opportunities to advance their horticultural knowledge.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Develop and implement comprehensive horticulture management plans for the golf course, encompassing all plant species, including hedges and naturalized areas
- Prioritize and schedule all horticulture activities in collaboration with the management team
- Source, purchase, and establish high-quality flowers, shrubs, and hedging materials to maintain the visual appeal and health of the property
- Oversee and train seasonal staff on proper techniques for maintaining the "horticulture areas," ensuring high standards of quality and efficiency
- Manage the annual maintenance budget for "horticulture areas," optimizing aesthetics within budget constraints
- Ensure the safety of equipment, machinery, and materials for both members and staff
- Collaborate with the contracted Arborist on projects and tasks that overlap arboriculture and horticulture throughout the season
- Assist with other golf course-related tasks as required during the season
- Proactively pursue educational opportunities related to horticulture and apply new knowledge to practical tasks
- Prepare detailed written documents and drawings for planting plans, progress reports, and other relevant information
- Act as a club ambassador, providing excellent service and interacting positively with members, guests, and staff
- Maintain a clean, professional appearance and uphold the club's standards of dress and conduct
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Head Horticulturalist or Course Superintendent
- Participate in weekly technical meetings and provide written reports, updates, and detailed documentation as required
- Work with environmental best management practices in mind, using native species when possible
- Ensure parking lots and walkways are free from overhanging branches and foliage from adjacent trees, shrubs, and hedges
- Balance performing work to a high standard, maintaining efficiency and contributing towards a great member experience
- Responsible for various skilled and semi-skilled tasks relating to on-course projects, annual “in-house” renovations, and general plant upkeep
- Source, purchase, and establish flowers, shrubs, and hedging materials as required
Qualifications:
Education:
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a recognized degree/diploma program in horticulture.
Experience:
- Proven experience in horticultural maintenance and management, preferably in a golf course setting.
General Skills:
- Ability to manage budgets and resources effectively
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to manage a team of 1-3 team members
- Has a practical knowledge of the game of golf and has a rough understanding of its rules
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid driver's license in British Columbia
- British Columbia pesticide applicator license (or willingness to obtain)
Technical Abilities:
- Experience in skilled, semi-skilled and hand labour tasks
- Working knowledge of MS Office
- Calibration and application of fertilizers and chemicals
- Proficiency in irrigation scheduling, repair, and maintenance
- Strong knowledge of plant identification, selection, and care practices
- Expertise in horticultural techniques including pruning, propagation, and pest and disease management
Physical Abilities:
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and varying environmental conditions (heat, rain, cold)
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently
- Ability to perform physical tasks requiring bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, standing, and walking for extended periods

General Expectations:
- The Head Horticulturalist must be available as much as possible for shifts during our central aeration and topdressing (April and September)
- The Head Horticulturalist must be flexible to assist with other golf course-related tasks as required throughout the season
- The Head Horticulturist a minimum of 40 hours a week. Schedules are posted in advance, and mutual consent is required to alter shifts with notice of less than two weeks
The pay range is between $28 – $35 per hour and will be based on experience.
Participation in maintenance activities outside of horticulture will help students develop an understanding of how the golf course is maintained, which will give them a better understanding of the role of the Horticulturist.
